The 250-year-old Palace is one of the most significant works of Hungarian Baroque architecture. Its builder, Count Antal Grassalkovich I (1694-1771) was a typical figure of the regrouping Hungarian aristocracy of the 18th century. The Austro-hungarian Monarchy's ruling couple, Emperor Franz Joseph and his wife Queen Elizabeth (known as Sissi and regarded with great affection by the Hungarians) frequently stayed here. The grand staircase, the state room, the Queen's saloon, retiring room and bedroom, Franz Joseph's workroom and smoking room have been restored to their former glory. The chapel and the Calvary date back to the 18th century.
